18-feet by 10-feet | Acrylic on canvas

I’ve been creating larger paintings in recent years, and I just created my largest painting to date, 18-feet by 10-feet. It covered almost my full studio floor.

To create this painting I wanted to use an extra large paint brush, so I commissioned a brush maker to make a 48” tall brush. The scale of the brush worked great. After painting the background in neutrals and light slate blue and olive, I loaded the brush with carbon black paint and began striking the canvas in bold, circular shapes. I knew the composition that I wanted to make, and the painting really came alive as I painted with this large brush.

Painting in this size confirmed what I thought would be the case—I really love painting large scale.
