I’ve always wanted to do a self-portrait in my abstract style. I’ve painted other portraits abstractly and really discovered a lot from the process.
— Melissa Mahoney

As I expanded my studio space in July of 2021, I felt inspired and energized.

I channeled these feelings—especially the empowering energy that I felt—and I started painting in bold, warm colors and using bold strokes.

I really enjoyed turning the focus on myself in this way to create this self-portrait.

The painting reflected exactly how I felt when I created it, so I titled it Energized.

This photo captures the painting in process, showing the paint strokes extend beyond the canvas. This created extra energy and motion on the canvas.
